Student Design Workshop
The workshop for the aspiring student attempting to learn about design
from various angles possible – its history, the country's ethnography
(its people), its management-related issues, its politics and policies,
its technology capabilities, its art, architecture and other creative
areas, and such – all of which have knowledge implications for design.
The theme
‘Design Local’ was interpreted in many ways as applied to
different situations and problems concerning the suburban trains in Mumbai.
135 students and 18 facilitators from 15 countries participated in the
Workshop. The workshop had 9 tracks and was held on Monday 5th, Tuesday
6th and Wednesday 7th of February 2007, at IDC, IIT Bombay.

Theme:
The three day workshop promises to be filled with high energy interactive
sessions with lots of enthusiasm to search, ideate, discuss and design.
Students from 25 countries are expected to participate. The theme ‘Design
Local’ will be interpreted in many ways as applied to different situations
and problems.
Leaders/facilitators:
International and National leaders will lead and guide the student teams
for three days:
1st Day – Need Finding, 2nd Day – Ideation, 3rd Day execution
and 4th Day - exhibition.
Procedure
for selecting student participants:
100
- 150 students winning this competition will be entitled to free participation
(workshop expenses, food and stay*) during the ‘International Student
Workshop’ from 5th to 7th of February 2007.
Competition:
The theme of the icograda Design Week in India – ‘Design Local
- Stops at all Stations’ has to be interpreted as applied to your
own context.
We encourage
you to express the colourfulness, the dynamism, characteristics, motifs
and designs from your everyday lives. The task will be to portray the
experience and the essence of design in your own context. You have the
freedom of choosing your own boundaries and define what is local to you.
(for eg. it could be your individual space, locality, a street, a town,
a city or even a country)
The task
is to design a visual with the above theme expressed inside a 45 degree
tilted square.
You could
use illustrations, sketches, photos, graphics and typography. The output
could be a symbol, logo or a poster.
You could
also send us a brief write-up in less than 150 words along with the entry.
Submissions:
You need to submit the solution as 72 dpi JPEG file with an image size
of 1200 x 1200 pixels and email it to:

Details:
- Studios, materials and facilities for the workshop will be provided
at IDC, IIT Bombay.
- The students have to bear the expenses of their travel to Mumbai
- * Students chosen to participate at the workshop will be accommodated
free in Hostels/Guest Houses around the IIT Bombay Campus on the 4th,
5th, 6th and 7th of February 2007. (The stay can be exptended for the
duration of the International Design conference on the 7th and 8th of
February 2007 by paying nominal charges (Rs. 150 or US $ 4.00 per day)
at the venue)
